The
Golden Jubilee
The most famous brown diamond hails
from South Africa. Discovered in 1986, it was a golden-yellow
colour with a bright reddish hue at its centre, and was
originally called “the Unnamed Brown”. To
bring out its colour and avoid the deep cracks and inclusions
took three years, and all the skills of the master-cutter
Gabi Tolkowsky. He produced a magnificent 545.6 carat
“Fire-Rose cushion shape”, the largest polished
diamond ever! The diamond was presented to King Bhumbol
of Thailand to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his coronation,
and named the “Golden Jubilee” in honour of
the occasion. The stone is on display in Bangkok, at the
Royal Museum. |

The
Incomparable
The internally
flawless Incomparable with hints of brown, smoky amber
and champagne colours, was found in the Democratic Republic
of Congo on an old mine dump in the 1980’s. It was
cut into an unusual shield or “triolette”
shape of 407.48 carats. In 1988 it reached the highest
price ever bid at auction for a single diamond. |
